Golden Rules:
|
|
|
|
Unless you're movie or rock star, long hair is probably not gonna happen for you. Be on the safe side, get it trimmed - regularly. If you are balding, it is even more important to cut it short - nothing is worse than some guy with a comb over trying to hide his bald spot.

That's right - no beard, and definitely no 'stache. Keep those sideburns in check too. Yes, some men look good with facial hair, but why take the risk?
But there's more to this rule - NOSE HAIR is a massive turnoff. It simply must be kept under control or you're disqualified right there. Take care of that ear hair too, if it's a problem. Finally, make sure you aren't sporting a unibrow, that's a big no-no.

Who knew - women really pay attention to a guy's finger nails. They want to see them clean, and trimmed to a reasonable length (no crack-sniffing pinky nail please.) For ears, wax buildup can be a serious issue. Use a tissue after every shower, or (lightly) use a cotton swab to keep your ears clear.

This is not a direct suggestion - very few women responded that you should not wear cologne per se (though most said use a light one.) What we did find is one woman would say "oh, Hugo Boss is great, I recommend that" whereas two others would say "whatever you do, don't get Hugo Boss, I can't stand it, " or "Hugo Boss reminds me of my ex-boyfriend, no good." Thus we recommend going with no scent for now, to be safe. Your soap and shampoo, plus freshly washed clothing, will make for an attractive scent on its own.

This should go without saying, however visit any college engineering or computer science lab and clearly this common sense rule is not being followed. C'mon, it only takes 10 minutes, and the people around will be eternally grateful.

There's no way around it - if you have ear or nose hair, it has got to go. It doesn't matter how you get rid of it, but it is essential that it be kept under control and out of sight. If not - it's a total turnoff. While you're at it, pay attention to any overgrown brow or mole hairs.

'Styling' your hair needn't be complicated, just spruce it up a little so it doesn't look like you just got out of bed or the shower. The main point is to show you put some effort in. Don't over-do it. When using hair gel; you only need a little bit - squirt a dob in the palm of your hand about the diameter of a dime.

Sitting at a computer all day you are unlikely to have terribly dirty nails, but pay attention to nail length and shape. You want to go for smooth and well-trimmed - leave the long nails to the ladies. Consider getting a nail-brush to clean out nail dirt.

Advanced Options:
- Pluck any visible stray hairs (chest, brow, back)
- Use a dryer sheet to give your clothes a light fresh scent
- Floss your teeth regularly
- If you're going to be wearing sandals all summer, consider getting a pedicure in the spring to keep your toenails in check
- If you look good with a buzz-cut, purchase hair clippers and do it yourself to save $$$

"Cut your hair regularly. Well-kept and coiffed guys will always have a leg up. Its really tough to pull off the slight-slob look and to make it cool - and most who try fail. I think unless you're a rock star it should be avoided. Good grooming goes a long way. "
