Standard "Can't-Go-Wrong" Suggestions:

Please note: the items listed below are girl-approved examples. Although each item is linked to a vendor that sells the item, we're not advocating any exact make, model, or vendor. We highly recommend vendors which offer free in-store returns or free shipping on certain orders, such as:

Buy Shoes at Zappos.com. Brooks Brothers - 88x31

Men's Dark Gloves

Go with leather or knitted gloves. Try to avoid anything too bulky or flashy. Color-wise you can't go wrong with brown or black. These won't stand up to a -40 degree blizzard, but they're great for driving with a freezing steering wheel.

Men's Scarf

The scarf allows you to add a dash of color to your otherwise neutral winter outerwear.

Men's Wool Pea Coat

You can't go wrong with black or a charcoal gray, be wary of other colors. Preferred size is 3/4 length, which means it should slightly cover your butt. Don't mistake this for a trench coat - pass on those (especially the black ones.)

Dress it up with a scarf and gloves and your date will be impressed - much more than if you wore your old ski jacket.

Advanced Options:

  • Brown coats are less of a sure bet, but some people can pull them off
  • Leather jackets can be OK - but not for everyone - really depends on the person
  • Knit hats are OK, but must be 'nice'... i.e. no pom-poms, tassles, or bright colors

"If you want to kick up the sophistication quotient for a nice evening out, wear a nice wool coat instead of a ski jacket."
